WHAT IS DONEPEZIL?
Donepezil is used for improving the function of the nerve cells in the brain. This medicine primarily stops the breakdown of acetylcholine which is crucial for the processes of memory, thinking, and reasoning. People suffering with dementia have a lower level of acetylcholine.
Donepezil is sold under various names like Aricept and Donep and prescribed for people with mild to moderate dementia induced by Alzheimer.
It should be taken under a doctor’s guidelines. People suffering with heart disease, a heart rhythm disorder, urination problems, stomach ulcers or bleeding, asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a seizure disorder, asthma, kidney or liver disease should not take it without consulting a doctor.
One should immediately stop using Donepezil if he/she experiences chest pain, low heart rate, bloody stools, coughing up blood, reduced urination, weakness, confusion, extreme thirst, or hot or dry skin.
Donepezil is a FDA pregnancy category C drug. This medication can be harmful to unborn baby if taken while being pregnant. Pregnant women or lactating mothers should consult a doctor before taking the medicine.
